On April 26, 1986, Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear reactor underwent a series of explosions, leading to the deaths of 56 people -- and giving an estimated 4,000 people conditions that will lead to cancer deaths. In addition, over 350,000 people had to be evacuated from a large "dead zone" contaminated with radiation around the site, leaving thriving cities as ghost towns. It will be 900 years before the area is safe to live in.
